READ ALOUD

Opa can read her a story from four hundred kilometres away

Record about ninety seconds of someone's voice, with their permission, and every book can be read in it from then on.

No card, no password. One book to keep, whatever you decide after.

  • A narrator for every book

Pick from a small cast of narrators chosen by hand for each language, warm ones and playful ones. Tap a page to hear it, or have the whole book read straight through.

  • Or a voice from your own family

A grandparent reads three short passages into a phone once. After that the app can read any book in their voice, in any of the seven languages, which is worth something on the evenings when they cannot be there. Four sliders let you tune the delivery afterwards: warmer, slower, more like them.

  • Recorded with permission, deleted on request

A cloned voice is only made after the person it belongs to has said, on the record, that they agree. Deleting it removes it from us, from the provider, and from anywhere it was set as a default. We treat a voice as what it legally is, which is personal data of the most sensitive kind.

  • The screen stays awake

A small thing that matters at bedtime: the phone does not dim or lock while a book is open.

Worth knowing

A cloned voice reading a language its owner does not speak sounds like them speaking it with an accent, which some families love and others find strange. You can hear it before you commit. Narration also stays inside your family: it never travels with a book you publish, because that consent was given for your home and not for the internet.
